Introduction:

High Security Doorknob and Deadbolt Locks

High Security Doorknob and Deadbolt Locks

High-security locks are locks that are way more secure than the regular locks that you find in a hardware store or buy online.

High-security locks are built in a different way than most locks and they have their own “keyway”. Therefore, it is much harder to gain unauthorized access and offer a far superior key control, meaning the duplication of the keys are much harder.

There are several advantages for high-security locks:

  1. They are much more difficult to pick with standard pick tools.
  2. In addition, High-security locks are much more difficult to use a bump key to open them.
  3. Moreover, High-security locks are much harder to drill because they are made with better technology and materials.
  4. Duplication of the keys are much harder and require a special machine and/or identity verification of some sort, which makes key control easier.
  5. Finally, they come in different colors, styles, and can be compatible with most common locks (doorknob, deadbolts etc.)

How to choose the right high-security lock? Things to consider before buying a new lock.

  • First, estimate what is your budget. Keep in mind that the price of the lock is higher if you buy from a locksmith. In addition, try to calculate the total price, including installation by a locksmith which will probably you will need.
  • Second, figure out what level of security you really need or for business, required by law. High-security locks come as a complete lock or as separated cylinders. Cylinders are cheaper than buying the whole lock.
  • Third, think about your needs, or your business needs. Will you need to do a lot of rekeying or let many people get into the house in the future? Will you need to change the locks again afterwards? If so, you may want to buy a lock that has a unique keyway. Alternatively, you can buy a high-security lock which the cylinder can be replaced (Interchangeable core).
  • In addition, think about cases that may happen such as lock repair. High-security locks are expensive and should last very long time. However, in case you need it repaired for some reason, it would be wise to consider buying a lock from a reputable provider.
  • Finally, remember that more expansive doesn’t necessarily mean better. High-security locks are already great choice as far as durability, security and key control. Electronic features or Bluetooth capabilities aren’t really a necessity most people or business owner need.

What are the pros and cons of high-security locks?

High Security Deadbolt Lock

High Security Deadbolt Lock

Pros:

  1. Provides top of the line security.
  2. Reduces the chances of unauthorized entry such as bump key or pick tools.
  3. High-security locks are also very strong locks. They are very hard to drill and therefore increases security.
  4. Variety – High-security locks can be adjusted and installed the same as regular locks. In addition, they can be installed as a cylinder only, to reduce cost.
  5. Availability – Today high-security locks are available on Amazon, and also many locksmiths shops.
  6. Key control – Because high-security locks have a certain keyway, these keys cant be duplicated but only with a special machine. Therefore, as long as you have all your keys, you can be pretty sure no one made a copy.

Cons:

  1. Cost – High-security locks are more expensive and usually ranges from $100 and up.
  2. Lost keys – In case you lose your key or want to make a duplicate, it is more expensive and takes longer as most chances only the locksmith who sold you the lock can do that.
  3. High-security locks, even though they are far more secure than regular locks, still don’t provide the ultimate 100% security. Something to remember before making this additional expanse.
  4. Rekey – In case you want to change your keys, you may have to replace the whole cylinder and/or the whole lock. Unlike regular locks, which can be easily rekeyed, high-security locks, by their nature, are harder to rekey and therefore the procedure is more expensive.
